  • Complete 1 of the focused choice books for your upcoming grade level listed below

  • Complete 1 free choice book  (based on your interest)

  • Read for a minimum of 20 -  30 minutes each day.  

  • Complete the stop & jots to keep track of your thinking as you are reading

  • In August, we will share & assess our reading experience with our peers with various tasks from our tic-tac-toe choice board.  Tasks include

Summer Reading Stop & Jots: Keeping track of your ideas!

Directions: While you are reading, if you come across important parts, STOP and JOT down your thinking!  We have provided some questions to help you with your jots.  

Character Jot:

What do you notice about the main character in your book? (jot important details)

Conflict Jot:

What conflict is beginning to develop for the main character?

Character Changes or Response to Conflict Jot:

How is the main character responding to the conflict?

How does the main character change in the book?

Theme Jot:

What lesson(s)does the main character learn throughout the book and at the end of the book? (think about possible themes)

















Tic-Tac-Toe Choice Board: Summer Reading Check-In

Choose three activities in a row to share your learning from your summer reading experience.  You may choose three diagonal activities, three in a row, or three up and down a column.  You can get a jump start and begin working on this in the summer, OR you can work on this the first week of school in August!


Create an illustrated timeline of important events in the novel. You must include at least ten of the most meaningful developments.


Illustrate a detailed postcard from one character to another. Include setting information from the novel as well as a letter that would show important details about all characters.

Movie Poster

Design a movie poster for the novel. Include an important scene as the main image and use details from the story (such as characters) in your text.

Graphic Novel Scene

Choose a scene from the novel to depict in graphic novel style. Include at least five squares in your new interpretation. Look up popular graphic novels to see examples.

Book Shout Out!

Write a review of your book or write a brief reflection piece about your book.

Book Talk

Pitch the book to an audience in a 1-minute conversation or in writing. You should be persuasive in tone and convince them to read your book.


What do you think is the theme of the text? Provide evidence from the text to support your theme and justify your answer. 

Rewrite the Ending

Hate the way the story ended? Write a new one! Choose an important scene from the story and plot the rest of the novel from there. Your new ending should be at least 500 words.

Instagram Post

Make an Instagram post from one of the main characters. Use hashtags, a photo, and a caption.
